Joel Mamboka, born in 1990 in Kinshasa, DRC, discovered his passion for art even before starting school. He honed his skills in painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kinshasa. Mamboka's work juxtaposes nostalgic objects like transistor radios and tube televisions with contemporary items such as cellphones and smartwatches, highlighting the timeless nature of fashion.
His vibrant and colorful art reflects his optimistic outlook on life, emphasizing the positive amid the negative. Mamboka frequently incorporates African wax cloth in his pieces, both as backdrops and clothing for his characters, symbolizing a connection to heritage and home.
Mamboka's notable exhibitions include 'This is Me' at Zeitz MOCAA (2019), 'Rise' at Cape Town Central Library (2019), and 'Home is Where Art Is' at Zeitz MOCAA (2020-2021). In 2022, he exhibited at Youngblood Africa, followed by Fine Art Knysna's 25th Anniversary and the Stellenbosch Art Auction in 2023. His upcoming 2024 exhibition will be at The Gallery, Steyn City, in association with Everard Read and Knysna Fine Art.
Sibusiso Makhunga, a self-taught artist from Richards Bay, KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), left his 9-5 job to pursue his passion for art. Under the mentorship of established Congolese artist Thonton Kabeya, he achieved significant milestones early in his career. In 2019, Makhunga’s debut at the RnB Turbine Art Fair was a sold-out success, followed by an exhibition at the Bag Factory Summer Salon.
In 2020, his works were showcased at the Workers Museum, and he conducted workshops for students at John Ross College. The next year, he participated in the Creative Contagious Group Exhibition in Ballito and held a solo exhibition, "The Innocence of a Childhood's Happiness," at Alliance Françoise in Durban. In 2022, he led art workshops for children and exhibited at the Candice Berman Gallery.
Makhunga's art, characterized by collage, bold colors, and rich textures, reflects his passion for fashion and human beauty. In 2023, he joined a residency at Randsteam Shopping Centre and exhibited with Asisebenze Art Atelier at Sanlam Private Wealth, further establishing his presence in the art world.
